The remarkable streak of Xander Schauffele, known for his impressive consistency on the PGA TOUR, has come to an unexpected end. Just recently at the Farmers Insurance Open, Schauffele found himself missing a crucial birdie putt on his last hole during the second round, leaving him just one stroke short of making the cut and marking the conclusion of his incredible run of 72 consecutive cuts made.
This streak was particularly noteworthy as it was the longest active record since the legendary Tiger Woods set a staggering mark of 142 straight made cuts. Schauffele hadn’t missed a cut since the 2022 Masters Tournament, which feels like ages ago for a golfer of his caliber.
In this recent tournament held at the challenging Torrey Pines South Course, Schauffele faced a tough first round, carding a score of 73. However, he showed resilience in the second round, fighting back and putting himself in contention on the back nine of the North Course. Early on Friday, he managed to sink three birdies within the first four holes, bringing him to a commendable three under par and positioning him well above the cut line. Unfortunately, disaster struck on the par-4 seventh hole, where he recorded a bogey that pushed him below the line once again.
As he continued his round, Schauffele made par at the par-3 eighth but struggled on the par-5 ninth, where he overshot the green with his second shot and couldn't convert for a birdie. "I had plenty of golf today to make it and bogeying a drivable par 4 and parring two par 5s in the middle of the fairway, you deserve to miss the cut," he reflected candidly. "So here I am."
Schauffele also mentioned he was still adjusting to some new equipment changes he introduced this week, including a new driver. "I don't like switching stuff and I switched, and then when you switch back, things kind of feel weird," he explained. "You start swinging to fit the club and it kind of affects everything down the bag. So not a great place to do it."
With Schauffele's streak now over, Scottie Scheffler steps into the spotlight as the holder of the longest active cut streak, currently sitting at 65 made cuts. Reflecting on his early exit, Schauffele expressed a silver lining: "Obviously I don't like missing cuts, I think my record proves that, but it's actually kind of nice, to be honest, if I was going to pick a spot. I get to hang out with my family. If I miss the cut in Charlotte or somewhere, I would just be sitting in a hotel room by myself. Here, I have the comfort of my family to hang out with. You know what, all said and done, it's probably the best place to miss it."
Schauffele wasn’t alone in his early departure from the event; he was joined by several other high-profile golfers. Ludvig Åberg, a favorite to win, struggled with a first-round score of 78 and couldn’t recover. Interestingly, Åberg had previously triumphed at Torrey Pines during last year’s Genesis Invitational. Similarly, Max Homa, who won the Farmers Insurance Open in 2023, was unable to bounce back from a disappointing opening round of 75, finishing 2-under on Friday yet still missing the cut by four strokes. Other notable players such as Patrick Cantlay (2 under), Will Zalatoris (1 under), J.J. Spaun (even-par), and Billy Horschel (5 over) also faced early exits, highlighting the unpredictability and fierce competition in professional golf.
