UK's Nuclear Renaissance: Billionaire Sołowow Invests £35bn in Small Modular Reactors (2026)

The UK's nuclear energy landscape is about to undergo a significant transformation, with a consortium led by the enigmatic billionaire industrialist, Michał Sołowow, announcing plans to invest a staggering £35 billion in small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs). This ambitious project, known as SGE SMR, aims to build 14 SMRs across three sites, including a former nuclear plant in Gloucestershire, marking a pivotal moment in the country's energy strategy.

What makes this venture particularly intriguing is Sołowow's approach. He plans to utilize private capital to power the equivalent of 8 million UK homes for over 60 years, or even support datacentre investments alongside tech giants like Google. This ambitious goal has sparked curiosity and debate within the industry.

SGE's plans are backed by a string of industrial partners, including GE Vernova and Hitachi, who are responsible for the design of the BWRX-300 reactors. The consortium aims to secure three sites for these boiling water reactors by next year and secure a government support contract, ensuring a competitive price for the electricity generated once it starts producing power in 2034.

One of the key aspects of this project is the government's advanced nuclear framework, which aims to fast-track the rollout of nuclear technologies. Sołowow believes this framework has created a clear path to market, leveraging the UK's experienced nuclear workforce. He envisions a unique competitive advantage for the UK economy by combining a disruptive business model with the proven 10th-generation technology of the BWRX-300.

This development comes on the heels of the Labour government's plans for a historic expansion in nuclear power across England and Wales. Keir Starmer's call for tech companies to collaborate with the government in building SMRs to power energy-intensive AI datacentres is a significant part of this initiative. SGE's plans, however, face competition from Rolls-Royce, who secured government funding to develop small reactors by 2032.

SGE's joint venture agreement includes Google Cloud, with Sołowow hoping for a partnership in investing up to £4.5 billion in datacentres to utilize the nuclear output. The consortium has chosen the contracts for difference scheme, which guarantees a fixed rate from energy bills, avoiding the controversial model used in the Sizewell C project. This approach minimizes the risk of higher costs for billpayers during construction delays.

The nuclear industry association's chief executive, Tom Greatrex, praised the government's nuclear framework for reviving interest in privately led nuclear projects. This project highlights the potential for private investment to drive nuclear energy development, offering a competitive edge to the UK economy. As the UK embraces this new era of nuclear power, the question remains: will this investment be enough to meet the country's energy demands and shape its future in the global energy market?
