Hold onto your hats, fashion and sneaker fans! Thom Browne, the master of sharp tailoring, just dropped a bomb on the runway with a surprise collaboration that’s turning heads and raising eyebrows: he’s teamed up with Asics!
Thom Browne is no stranger to the world of sports. In fact, this American designer, who recently showcased his Fall 2026 collection at our second annual GQ Bowl, has a deep personal connection to athletics. He’s not just a designer; he’s a lifelong athlete himself! You might recall him dressing sports titans like LeBron James and Lionel Messi, and he’s even drawn inspiration from sports like ice skating and surfing for his fashion shows. Browne has a knack for classic American sportswear, the laid-back cousin to the distinctive, shrunken suits that have made his brand a true standout in the fashion landscape.
Interestingly, since launching his eponymous brand back in 2001, Browne has steered clear of a full-blown sneaker collaboration. While his brand has produced its own sneakers in the past, this marks the first time he’s opened the meticulously curated world of Thom Browne to an external sneaker brand. And who better to enter this hallowed space than Asics? The soon-to-be-released, Browne-ified Gel-Kayano 14 made its grand debut at the GQ Bowl, offering a refreshing departure from the usual elegant oxfords and sophisticated lace-up boots that typically command attention on his runways. If you were watching closely, you might have even spotted an early glimpse of these highly anticipated sneakers on Teyana Taylor’s eldest daughter, who graced the (almost) red carpet – or should we say, the chic gray carpet – before the show.
But here's where it gets really interesting...
It’s a strategic move for Asics, who were also a sponsor of the GQ Bowl, to provide the perfect blank canvas for Browne’s artistic vision. The Gel-Kayano 14 is already a highly coveted model, a favorite not only for Browne but also for other influential figures and brands like Kiko Kostadinov, JJJJound, and even the late Vivienne Westwood. This sneaker is a true icon in its own right.
Browne has kept the core design of the Gel-Kayano 14 beautifully intact. He’s presented it in three classic colorways: gray, black, and white, each adorned with his signature grosgrain red-white-and-blue tab. The Gel-Kayano 14’s popularity is so immense that after it was initially discontinued following its 2008 release, dedicated fans would scour resale markets just to get their hands on a pair of these technologically advanced kicks. Its triumphant return in 2020, followed by a string of high-profile designer collaborations, has only solidified its legendary status in sneaker history. And given how quickly these sought-after models tend to vanish from shelves, we can confidently predict that Browne’s iteration will be exceptionally difficult to acquire.
And this is the part most people miss...
The GQ Bowl is now two for two when it comes to debuting highly anticipated designer sneaker collaborations. At the very first Bowl, Bode and Nike previewed a striking all-green colorway of their incredibly popular Astro Grabbers. What this means for future Bowls is anyone’s guess, but for now, we’re all eagerly awaiting the official drop of the Thom Browne x Asics collaboration.
Now, over to you! Thom Browne is known for his distinct aesthetic. Do you think this collaboration with Asics perfectly captures his signature style, or do you feel it dilutes his unique vision? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below – we'd love to hear your take!
