Breaking News: Steve Burton Takes a Temporary Leave from His Role as Jason Morgan on General Hospital
In an unexpected announcement that has fans buzzing, Steve Burton, the beloved star of General Hospital, revealed on February 9 that he is stepping away from his iconic role as Jason Morgan — but don’t worry, this isn’t a permanent goodbye. Just a day later, on February 10, Burton shared the news with his followers on Instagram, stating, “Hey everyone, I wanted to share that I’ll be taking a short break from General Hospital. I’m newly married and looking forward to spending some quality time with my family. I’m grateful for all the support and will be back this summer. Much love.”
Exciting Details About His Hiatus
According to Soap Opera Digest, Burton, who tied the knot with chef and content creator Michelle Lundstrom on May 17, 2025, had already filmed his final episode before his break. His last day at the studio was February 6, coinciding with an upcoming two-week production pause for the show. Given that General Hospital tapes episodes weeks in advance, fans can look forward to several more weeks of gripping storylines featuring Jason before his absence becomes noticeable on screen.
Frank Valentini, the Executive Producer of General Hospital, expressed his support in a statement: “We love Steve and I am glad the show worked it out so he can get some personal time with his family. We have some great Jason story leading up to spring and look forward to his return in the summer.”
A History of Hiatuses
This isn’t the first time Burton has taken a break from the show. He made his debut in Port Charles back in 1991, but in 1999, he opted not to renew his contract. After a brief return in August 2000 and again for several months in 2001, he officially rejoined the cast full-time in May 2002. However, in 2012, he made another tough decision to leave, sharing with Digest in 2017, “It was definitely one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make in my entire life... I grew up on the show, since I was 21 years old. The crew is like my family... it was really difficult to leave, but I needed a little bit of a change.”
Following this departure, Burton took on the role of Dylan McAvoy on The Young and the Restless, where his performance earned him another Daytime Emmy in 2017. That year, he returned to General Hospital to reprise his role as Jason, which had been briefly recast. Unfortunately, he left again in 2021 due to the show's implementation of a COVID vaccine policy.
After his exit from GH, Burton found himself back with Days of Our Lives, where he started his soap career in 1988. He reprised the character Harris Michaels for the spinoff Beyond Salem in July 2022 and continued on the main show until June 2024. On January 4, 2024, he surprised fans with the announcement of his return to General Hospital, which was made during a primetime special celebrating the show’s 60th anniversary. At the end of the hour-long retrospective, he made a shock appearance alongside co-stars Kelly Monaco and Laura Wright, announcing, “Happy anniversary, General Hospital. Stay tuned — big things are coming to Port Charles.” His first episode back aired on March 4.
