Remembering Veronica McDonnell: A Tribute to a Beloved Mayo Resident (2026)

It’s with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of Veronica McDonnell (née Callaghan), a cherished figure in the Midwest Radio community and beyond. Her gentle spirit and kind heart left an indelible mark on all who knew her, and her absence will be deeply felt. But here’s where it gets emotional—Veronica’s legacy lives on through the generations she nurtured and the love she shared. Surrounded by her devoted family in Kinard, Crossmolina, Co. Mayo, she peacefully departed this world, leaving behind a tapestry of memories that will forever be treasured.

Veronica was predeceased by her beloved husband, Tom, and is survived by a large and loving family who will miss her dearly. Her daughters—Mary, Barbara, Veronica, and Áine—and her sons—Frank, Tommie, Michael, Kevin, and David—were her pride and joy. She is also mourned by her sons-in-law John, Liam, John, and William, and daughters-in-law Bernie, Anne, Anna, Valerie, and Karen. But this is the part most people miss—Veronica’s role as a grandmother and great-grandmother was where her warmth truly shone. Her adored grandchildren Jonathan, Laura, Paul, John, David, Dylan, Brianna, Richard, Robert, Nola, Ruairí, Tom, Cillian, Chloe, and Ava, along with her ten great-grandchildren, were the light of her life. Nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbors, and friends will also feel the void of her absence.

May her kind and gentle soul rest in peace, a sentiment echoed by all who knew her. For those wishing to pay their respects, Veronica will be reposing at Hiney’s Funeral Home in Crossmolina (F26 DH95) on Friday, 26th December, from 5 o’clock, with removal at 7 o’clock to the Church of Our Lady, Kilmurry. The Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday, 27th December, at 12 noon, followed by burial in Kilmurry Cemetery. The family has requested family flowers only and kindly asks for privacy at their home.

And here’s a thought to ponder—in a world that often feels rushed and impersonal, Veronica’s life reminds us of the enduring power of love, family, and kindness. How will you carry forward her legacy in your own life? Share your thoughts and memories in the comments below, as we collectively honor a life well-lived.
