The dream of the Olympics is turning into a nightmare for some, as protests and suspected sabotage rock Italy's Olympic host cities! Just days after violent clashes marred events in Turin, Milan has also seen its share of unrest, leading to arrests and a stern response from the Italian government.
Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini has been vocal, labeling those involved in the confrontations as "criminals." He lamented the "shameful violence" in Turin and the subsequent "clashes" and "attacks on law enforcement" in Milan. Salvini proudly pointed to a new security package that he believes will empower authorities to take more decisive action against "thugs and criminals."
This situation follows a demonstration in Turin, initially a peaceful protest against the eviction of an unofficial social center, which unfortunately escalated into violence when armed groups confronted police. In the aftermath, over 30 people were arrested. The severity of the situation was highlighted when one officer was attacked with a hammer, an act Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned as attempted murder.
The recently adopted security package, fast-tracked due to the Turin incidents, grants police the authority to detain individuals suspected of planning unrest for up to 12 hours before demonstrations commence. However, this measure has drawn criticism, with some labeling it as repressive.
But here's where it gets controversial... While many participants in Saturday's Milan protest marched peacefully, expressing concerns about the sustainability of the Olympic Games, the narrative is more complex. One protester, Francesca Missana, voiced her opinion to AFP news agency, stating that the Olympic Games are "no longer sustainable from an environmental or a social point of view, their time is up." Alberto di Monte, a protest organizer, echoed these sentiments, telling AFP that the Games were promoted as "sustainable and cost-neutral." He argued that the extensive infrastructure spending, particularly on roads to connect multiple Olympic venues, could have been better directed towards protecting the mountains.
And this is the part most people miss... Saturday wasn't just about protests; it also saw significant disruption to Italy's northern rail networks, with suspected acts of sabotage causing hours of delays. A fire affected rail infrastructure between Bologna and Venice, and authorities later discovered severed cables and an explosive device in nearby locations. Specifically, a track switch was set ablaze near Pesaro on the Adriatic coast, and near Bologna, electric cables were found cut, along with a rudimentary explosive device near the tracks. Bologna's central rail station, a crucial hub connecting various parts of Italy, was particularly affected.
RFI, the railway infrastructure owner, has confirmed that services have since returned to normal. The Ministry of Transport has characterized these incidents as "suspected sabotage," noting their similarity to vandalism that occurred at the start of the Paris Olympics in 2024.
Despite these unsettling events, Salvini, who also serves as the transport minister, asserted on Saturday that "These actions of unprecedented seriousness do not in any way tarnish Italy's image in the world, an image that the Games will make even more compelling." The Winter Olympics are scheduled to run until February 22nd, spanning various locations from Milan to Cortina d'Ampezzo and the Dolomite regions.
