However, the current fragmented digital health infrastructure limits the potential of these innovative solutions, especially in resource-constrained environments.
In 2023, Google Research took a significant step forward by partnering with the World Health Organization (WHO) to launch Open Health Stack, an open-source toolkit aimed at empowering developers to create cutting-edge digital health solutions. Today, we see the next phase of this initiative as Google transfers the Open Health Stack code and assets to the Linux Foundation, which will establish the Open Health Stack Software Foundation (OHS-SF).
What makes this particularly fascinating is the focus on local, community-led innovation. The OHS-SF aims to provide a vendor-neutral, community-governed platform for essential digital health building blocks. This approach ensures that the project remains accessible and adaptable to the diverse needs of global health ecosystems.
