BYD has unveiled a powerful and improved version of the Atto 3, the Atto 3 EVO, offering a significant leap in performance and range. Despite its familiar exterior, the Atto 3 EVO boasts a host of under-the-hood upgrades that transform it into a more capable and efficient electric vehicle.
The new model is now available for pre-order, with customer deliveries expected in the spring. While BYD UK has yet to confirm pricing, it's anticipated that the price increase will be modest, remaining within the current range of £37,000 to £39,000. However, the value for money is undeniable, especially with the substantial enhancements.
The key upgrade lies in the electric powertrain, which has been completely overhauled with the introduction of BYD's innovative E-Platform 3.0 architecture. This new system features two motor options, each powered by a larger battery pack, now measuring 74.8 kWh, a 15 kWh increase over the previous model. The batteries are not just bigger but are also arranged in a 'cell-to-body' layout, optimizing interior space and reducing weight.
The entire system operates on an upgraded 800V architecture, enabling DC fast-charging speeds to double from 110 kW to 220 kW. BYD estimates a 10-80% charge time of around 25 minutes, significantly faster than the previous model.
The motors have also been enhanced, offering single and dual-motor options. The entry-level Comfort variant, with its single motor on the rear axle, delivers 308bhp and 380Nm of torque, achieving a 0-62 mph time of 5.5 seconds and a combined range of approximately 317 miles. This represents a 2.2-second improvement in straight-line performance and a 57-mile increase in range compared to the previous Atto 3.
The real game-changer is the dual-motor Excellence variant, which not only introduces all-wheel drive for the first time but also boosts power to 442bhp and torque to 560Nm. While the range is slightly lower at 292 miles, the Excellence variant accelerates from 0-62 mph in just 3.9 seconds.
To manage the increased power, BYD has adopted a more sophisticated five-link rear suspension system. The exterior styling has been subtly updated, featuring a new front bumper, simpler graphics, new rear lights, and classier wheel designs, giving the car a more sophisticated appearance.
Inside, the Atto 3 EVO features a refreshed design with a larger 15.6-inch touchscreen that now includes embedded Google apps, such as Maps and Google's voice assistant. An 8.8-inch driver's display and a gear selector moved to the steering column have also been added, freeing up storage space in the center console. Standard equipment includes a 360-degree parking camera system, heated front seats, wireless phone charging, and LED lights.
Despite the familiar body, BYD has optimized the car's packaging, increasing the boot space by 50 liters to 490 liters and providing 101 liters of space under the bonnet. This additional space is useful for storing charging cables. With the rear seats folded, the Atto 3 EVO offers a spacious 1,390 liters of cargo room, and its increased performance allows for a braked trailer rating of 1,500 kg.
