Lachlan Shire Mayor John Metcalf described the incident as a "crying shame" for a town of less than 1,500 people, known for its peaceful and picturesque setting.
"This is a small, close-knit community, and such an event is incredibly rare and shocking. We must come together and support each other through this difficult time," Metcalf said.
