At-Home Semen Analysis Kits: Revolutionizing Fertility Testing in Northern Ontario (2026)

Facing challenges in starting a family? For men in Northern Ontario, accessing fertility testing has just gotten a whole lot easier. Thanks to a new mail-in semen analysis kit from Flow Labs, the process is now more accessible than ever before. This innovative approach aims to eliminate the hurdles that have long plagued those seeking to understand their fertility, particularly in remote areas.

This groundbreaking kit allows men to collect a sample in the comfort of their own homes and then ship it to a certified lab for analysis. This is a game-changer for individuals who live far from major cities, where accessing basic fertility tests has often meant meticulous planning and significant travel.

Dr. Karen Splinter, an obstetrician-gynecologist at Health Sciences North in Sudbury, points out that the logistics of getting to a clinic can significantly delay testing. She notes that the female partner may have to wait three, four, or even five months before starting treatment while her partner completes his part of the testing. The new kit also addresses the potential embarrassment some men feel when visiting a clinic for such tests. Dr. Splinter draws a parallel to self-swabbing for HPV, suggesting that this at-home option could encourage more men to get tested.

Another major obstacle is the challenge of fitting appointments into schedules, particularly for those working shifts outside of regular medical hours.

The kit's development, which took two years, represents a significant step forward in making fertility testing more convenient. Dr. Keith Jarvi, head of urology at Mount Sinai Hospital and director of the Murray Koffler Urologic Wellness Centre, emphasizes that access to male infertility testing has long been uneven across Ontario. He points out the difficulty many face in getting semen tests due to the scarcity of testing locations outside major cities. Many patients currently travel for hours to access this essential service.

But here's where it gets controversial... The traditional testing model requires samples to be provided near a lab because sperm motility decreases rapidly after collection. The new kit, however, uses a device that separates motile sperm from non-motile sperm at the time of collection. This allows for accurate analysis even days later.

The kit provides the same comprehensive information as in-clinic tests, including sperm count, movement, and morphology. According to Murray Klien, president of Flow Labs, the kit is designed to bring lab-quality testing directly to patients facing significant barriers. Samples are sent to accredited labs in Toronto or Oshawa. The semen analysis itself is covered by OHIP with a doctor’s requisition, but patients pay for the courier, kit, and packaging, totaling around $80.

And this is the part most people miss... While the company isn't currently making a profit, the goal is to expand the service and eventually become profitable. The service has just begun rolling out, with only five kits shipped so far. Dr. Jarvi believes the impact on rural and northern patients could be substantial, improving access to care and saving people time.
